“The president of the United States is missing.”

Three years before Clinton and Patterson, another New York Times bestselling author of thirteen international thrillers, Joel C. Rosenberg, posed this chilling scenario What if the Islamic State captured the most valuable hostage in history?

Award-winning journalist J. B. Collins, reporting from the scene of a devastating attack by ISIS terrorists in Amman, Jordan, puts the entire world on high alert―the U.S. president is missing and presumed captured. With Israeli and Palestinian leaders critically injured and Jordan’s king fighting for his life, the allies are reeling and hopes for the peace process are dashed. As the U.S. government faces a constitutional crisis and Jordan battles for its very existence, Collins must do his best to keep the world informed while working to convince the FBI that his stories are not responsible for the terror attack on the Jordanian capital. And ISIS still has chemical weapons.

Struggling to clear his name, Collins works frantically with the Secret Service to locate and rescue the leader of the free world before ISIS’s threats become a catastrophic reality.

“One of the most entertaining and intriguing authors of international political thrillers in the country. . . . His novels are un-put-downable!” Steve Forbes, editor in chief, Forbes magazine

"Hard to do justice to the books of Joel Rosenberg: his books are increasingly rich in sensory detail, suspenseful, and accurate.

Briefly put, the main plot of First Hostage involves trying to rescue a fictional President of the United States, who has been kidnapped after a blistering and fatal attack on a world conference in Jordan. Few of those who attended the conference have survived, and the President's whereabouts is unknown. A video calling the President "the dog of Rome" appears. Explanations of this phrase are provided.

Events play out in a detailed but fast-moving narrative, masterfully handled. Characters seem real. The book could be real.

Which brings up a really chilling point: great care is taken to point out that the Presidential kidnapping ,and the fatal conference in Jordan happened because world leaders ignored facts.

Hopefully, this book, First Hostage, won't be ignored ..
One hopes that attention will be paid, thought given, and action taken."

The First Hostage A J B Collins Novel Joel C Rosenberg Books Reviews

  • Joel Rosenberg is an amazing writer. His work is well researched and full of history and detail. The characters are so well developed that they become a part of you and are unforgettable. You feel their joy, pain ... whatever they're going through. I get so excited when I receive one of his new books (or one I haven't read yet). With "The First Hostage" I tried to slow my reading down, forcing myself not to read more than a chapter a night because I knew when I finished it would be months before the next book was coming out.
  • After ISIS has attacked the peace summit in Jordan that would bring peace to Israel and Palestine, the President of the United States has suddenly gone missing. In an attempt to elude the attackers, the President was rushed off by the secret service to get on air force one. J.B. Collins was pulled alongside the Jordanian President who managed to get to the airport in an attempt to board the plane as well. Only one problem, air force one is gone, and the President is not one it. Unfortunately, the airport has been hit with sarin gas, which killed all those who where present. Not long after the attack, a new video surfaces showing Abu Kalid, head of ISIS, with the President saying that American has 48 hours to turn Islam or the President will be beheaded. Can he be saved? If so, how?

If Rosenberg was wanting to ratchet up the suspense in his novel, he certainly found the right formula. The next book in the series picks up immediately where the previous left off. Fortunately, I read them back to back so I didn’t have to wait months like everyone else. Rosenberg continues to combine tension and suspense and play up the romance between J.B. and Yael. You really wonder if this could happen, but the way Rosenberg lays it out, it really seems like it could. I’m starting to get a little scared of what he is writing because it really seems believable. What could possibly happen next?

  • J.B. Collins, reporter has found himself in another ticklish situation. If you haven't read previous Collins stories it might help to do so. It's not necessary but it would help. This time Collins finds himself in the middle of a mess in Ammon with ISIS attacking. Just when you think things have cleared up it is discovered the President is missing ( in this case, a president that we would actually want back). Collins finds himself on the front lines of trying to retrieve the President as well as keeping the King of Jordan alive and well. Mr. Rosenberg has once again written an excellent thriller that will keep you turning the pages. It is also a timely story that reflects what is going on in the Middle East. I will warn you though, when you finish this book you will be wanting to bug Mr. Rosenberg to get the next one out pronto. It's not truly a cliff hanger but of course he has left you wanting more of J.B. Collins story.

A truly enjoyable story. Another one that keeps Mr. Rosenberg as one of my, if not my favorite author.
  • I've read Joel C. Rosenberg before. I think this is one of his best efforts. His main character, JB Collins, is believable as a dedicated journalist covering the turbulent Middle East. The story is very fast paced with a lot of action. There is intrigue with the kidnapping of the president and the efforts of the US, Jordan, and other allies to get his safe return. Rosenberg does a great job keeping his hero, Collins, in the center of the action the whole way. The story is told by Collins using first-person narration. This works well because Rosenberg provides enough information through the thoughts of his narrator and from the dialog and action around him.

This is a great read for anyone who has an interest in the complicated politics in the Middle East. While the story does focus on military actions in the area, there is a thoughtful account of the political issues of the president being kidnapped and the stormy reaction by the people involved to the volatile political and cultural issues from the area.

I highly recommend this book. I look forward to more featuring JB Collins (the J is for James). I will definitely read the other two books of Rosenberg's that I haven't read yet. Enjoy!
  • Be sure to read the first part of this story, "The Third Hostage", before you delve into this book, " The First Hostage". The story of a Peace Summit Signing in the Mid-East brokered by Jordan and many of the other Arab Nations, plus Israel and the United States, is interrupted by a vicious ISIS attack. When POTUS is kidnapped by ISIS, things couldn't look bleaker. Reporter, J. B. Collins is in the thick of it......the planning to rescue the President. The twists and turns and speed of the story will keep you engrossed from beginning to end. The writing is superb; the characterizations authentic. Prepare to be amazed!
