Blessed Is the Man A Legacy of Faith and Family Values Donald Darnell Harper Abigale Belcher Ogden 9781940645414 Books Reviews
- Donald Harper has written a love story. He calls it a collection of stories about an African-American family growing up in rural Alabama. But, it is really a love story about his parents and how their example, work ethic and Christian values were passed on to him and his 12 siblings. Life had to have been hard, growing up on a farm, long before the Civil Rights era. But, Harper focuses on the positive, using Scriptures and tying them to short vignettes about his family life. Through it all runs a continuous inspirational thread "Serve the Lord and put God first in everything." This was a thoughtful, enjoyable read, with short questions to contemplate at the end of each chapter, making it perfect for a book club read.
- After knowing Don Harper for a little more than 25 years as a co-worker and friend - reading the story of his parents provides the basis for the person who became my friend. The legacy his parents left was not wasted on Don. Further, it evidences what faith based strength is all about. I have read the book two times, and I recommended same as a model for young parents raising children, a training aide for churches (Sunday School), and African American studies in middle and high school. Lastly, this is a great read for all cultures without regard to ethnicity. The book is easy and interesting to read and has great connectivity going from one chapter/theme to another. Thanks to Gerri and Don for sharing their parents legacy and Don's life as well.
Toy Fitzgerald - No matter whom we are, where we live, or what our life goals may be, this book can be an inspiration. It is a story of a social, emotional, and spiritual legacy passed on from parents, Walter Mae and Lloyd Harper, Sr., to children of the Harper family. Passing on positive, affirming Christian beliefs and values are illustrated throughout the pages. Enduring a sense of security and stability nurtured in an environment of love promoted Donald Harper, youngest of 13 children, to write about respect, responsibility, and how to relate to God’s truth. It could be said that leaving a Godly legacy is the purpose as parents. “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it†(Prov. 226 NIV). A must read for those of us who want to have healthy, holy relationships with others. What we do now matters, and it affects generations.
- God had a plan for Lloyd and Walter Mae. Against all odds, Lloyd was given an opportunity in the segregated South that enabled him to build a successful business as a farmer. He was truly blessed and never took that for granted. The book shares heartwarming stories about how the couple taught their children to love the Lord above all else, work hard, and respect others. These life lessons live on in their legacy through their successful children. I am lucky enough to have known and the author for many years. Don Harper was one of the best leaders I've ever worked for and I loved learning about what shaped him into the successful compassionate, and caring man he is today.
- Everyone needs heroes. My first thought after reading this book was I wish I could have known Lloyd and Walter Mae Harper. They are heroes - not the unrealistic type portrayed in movies - but rather the living, breathing, working-every-day, determined-against-all-odds "everyday folks" type of hero. I hope this story is shared with millions of young men and women who are embarking on educational pursuits/careers/families or whatever. The example of the Harpers will provide encouragement and a model for pursing matter matters most in life.
- This book is a great reminder of what an amazing impact Godly parents can have on their children. My highest priority in raising my two sons is for them to build an intimate relationship with Jesus. And this book confirms and inspires that. This book continually illustrates how a family (against the odds) continued to push forward, relying on their faith and hard work. Don Harper continues to weave scripture throughout this book to illustrate how in every situation the family faced; God had an answer for it. It's a great reminder for all of us!
- Great reflection book... thank you
- This inspiring book of reflection proves the adage that one's only really important legacy is our children. Lloyd and Walter Mae Harper were clearly amazing people of great faith and character whose influence carried their children to achieving and highly principled lives. The stories of growing up are wonderfully recalled in a thoroughly uplifting and loving manner. I wish the book contained even more stories of the author's remarkable parents and upbringing. A great read.
